About the Role

The Senior Health Economist will join a high-caliber team to execute health economics research and projects across a variety of non-communicable disease projects in different geographies. The individual will support the CEO of Health Finance Institute to ensure project plans integrate and align with the core objectives of the organization, lead tactical execution of projects, and communicate results to internal and external stakeholders. HFI’s clients for ongoing and upcoming health economics projects include leading global pharma companies, international organizations, and leading universities.

About HFI’s Health Economics Work

What constitutes a smart investment in health? How do we prove the economic case for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention, access, and adherence to driving better decision-making with priority given to the worst off? These are among the powerful questions HFI’s Health Economics team works towards answering daily. Using practical and research-driven approaches, our work strives to close the NCD financing gap and reduce NCD morbidity and mortality worldwide – saving millions of lives and health systems dollars.

The HFI Health Economics team works with a range of stakeholders from the public and private sectors. Examples of HFI’s current Health Economics projects include:

  • Developing impact frameworks in collaboration with private-sector partners to forecast the impact of the partners’ activities in improving access to NCD medicines in countries around the world. The impact frameworks explore the value of the partners’ activities beyond traditionally reported outputs and include a view of short- and long-term patient outcomes as well as metrics around affordability, accessibility, and market-shaping activities.
  • Developing cost-effectiveness models for disease-specific prevention, screening, and treatment programs in the country. The cost-effectiveness models developed are accompanied by a user-friendly interface demonstrating the health, economic, and market impacts of various screening and treatment scenarios. The model outputs are aimed to assist countries in planning the provision of services and the procurement of relevant NCD commodities and equipment at national and sub-national levels, as well as a better understanding of the health, economic, and financial tradeoffs when planning NCD care post-pandemic. The model findings are used in dialogues with relevant stakeholders for future and optimal programming of screening and early intervention services, including, but not limited to, policymakers, budget officials, and political and business leadership.
  • Supporting cross-sector conversations at high-level events to build capabilities in health financing conversations. These engagements include the development of white papers focusing on the trends in health financing and access to innovations across global markets. Additionally, the HFI team supports the CEO’s attendance at selected multilateral platforms with talking points, formats for closed-door roundtable events, and event reports.

A successful Senior Health Economist will be strategically minded, highly motivated, and a creative problem solver with strong analytic and communication skills with a commitment to excellence and producing results. Further, project management experience and timely completion of external facing projects are a must

This position is based in DC/Virginia/Maryland and will report to the Chief Executive Officer.
