In this issue:
HFI and C/Can partner to improve cancer care financing

Care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer is perpetually underfunded at the global and local levels. This lack of sufficient funding means too many cancer patients go without the high-quality, affordable care they need. To address this financing gap, HFI is partnering with City Cancer Challenge Foundation (C/Can) to build blended finance partnerships to finance care for people living with NCDs.

Together, HFI and C/Can will explore how innovative financing mechanisms can power robust, sustainable funding for C/Can’s city cancer care interventions. HFI will lead a series of workshops for C/Can’s team and stakeholders in participating cities with the aim of building capacity in innovative finance mechanisms. In late 2021, following these workshops, C/Can and HFI aim to begin a pilot program with one of C/Can’s cities using blended finance to scale up evidence-driven solutions for cancer patients.

Health Finance Digest: OECD Blended Finance and Impact Week reflections

During the first week of February, the OECD hosted the 2021 Blended Finance and Impact Week. Throughout the week, our team had the chance to attend events focused on closing the SDG financing gap, how to drive impact, and building back better after COVID-19. Several HFI team members share their reflections on the week.

"OECD's 2021 Blended Finance & Impact week was a fascinating series of conversations. From trying to improve accountability and trust to structuring bankable deals and generating case studies, the space is ripe for investment and growth. Ultimately, I came away feeling HFI is uniquely positioned to quantify the risks, returns, and impacts of the deals we structure and to build a pipeline in the NCD space while many others are focused on more established blended finance sectors such as climate." - Erin Gregor, Chief of Staff

"The 2021 Blended Finance & Impact week brings public and private actors together to move the needle on SDGs. During one of the sessions, leaders from DFIs and MDBs discussed Tri Hita Karana (THK) Roadmap on Blended Finance for addressing both immediate health emergency and longer-term socio-economic recovery.  My biggest takeaway is that we need to better leverage the scarce and slow-growing resources from MDBs and DFIs to introduce more private financial flows linked to SDGs. This resonates with HFI’s mission and vision to design innovative and blended finance instruments for a new way of public-private partnership." - Yun Fu, Innovative Finance Associate
