Our Top 10 Achievements in 2019
in no particular order!

10.  Brokering knowledge with tools and guidance documents

HFI developed knowledge products including a working paper on innovative financing for NCDs, an initial roa
dmap of financing solutions, advocacy reports, briefs, and primers on innovative financing instruments and from the gender lens.
9.  Teeing up a pipeline of country projects
While building our organization and identifying business development opportunities, we were also hard at work forging relationships with country partners. We've identified excited opportunities to develop blended finance models in Southeast Asia and Western Africa and are looking forward to sharing more with our readers in 2020.
8. Sending monthly newsletters
Thanks to your interest and readership, HFI introduced its monthly newsletter in the summer of 2019. We hope you enjoy following us on our journey because we are! We value your readership and welcome more opportunities to engage.

7. Assembling an outstanding team

Since launching in early 2019, HFI has attracted a talented team with decades of experience in global health and development, economics, finance, and business that are uniquely able to build trust with multi-sectoral stakeholders and broker investments that create social impact. We are looking forward to expanding in the new year.

6. Hosting our first inaugural symposium at World Health Assembly in Geneva

On May the 21st, 2019 alongside the 72nd World Health Assembly, we organized our first Inaugural Symposium on Financing for NCDs in Geneva, Switzerland at the Geneva Graduate Institute. Our Symposium's two sessions drew from the experiences of high-level political and technical experts from countries, multilateral institutions, the private sector, global development agencies, and implementers in the field and was followed by a dynamic Q&A segment with audience participants and a private roundtable session.

Check out our Symposium report.

5. Launching HFI and iterating on strategy

As you know, HFI was formed with the recognition that there is a global need for greater concerted action on NCD and mental health financing. We, Andrea and Surabhi, are proud that our hard work and efforts in the past year have been paying off. HFI has taken on its first clients, attracted hard-working and passionate staff, developed and iterated on our strategy and offerings, and built the foundation for critical partnerships. We are excited to see all that next year has to bring!

4. Building a network of advisors, supporters, and collaborators in the field
2019 was a year of great success for our young organization, and we could not have done it without the support of individuals like you. We are proud to have built a network of advisors, supporters, and collaborators in the field with expertise, passion, and a commitment to solving some of the pressing issues in global health today.

See our partnerships ecosystem.
3. Representing HFI at the 74th UN General Assembly

We were pleased to have four staff members attend UNGA 74. The Health Finance Institute attended the Friends of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases meeting on September 23rd at the United Nations as a "Friend" of the UNIATF while dividing and conquering at UNGA side events.

We are already looking forward to UNGA 75.

2. Speaking at global events

HFI had a strong global presence at multiple agenda-setting events. From co-hosting a session at PMAC in January 2019 around multi-sector engagement and innovative financing for NCDs to attending the Salzburg Global Seminars to speaking at a virtual discussion at the Chatham House to speaking on a panel session on digital health solution at Wilton Park, it was a whirlwind of a year for Dr. Feigl. More recently, she moderated a panel session at the WHO Global Meeting to Accelerate Progress on SDG 3.4 in Muscat, Oman in December and prepared for two panel events in Davos.

More on HFI’s presence in Davos in our next newsletter!
1. Publishing the WHO-commissioned business plan for multi-donor Trust Fund for NCDs

HFI was commissioned by the WHO High-Level Commission on NCDs to develop a business plan for the first ever global catalytic fund for NCDs during the summer of 2019. After conducting a series of stakeholder consultations, developing a structured review of development funds, and drafting a scoping document, the report was launched at the WHO Global Meeting to Accelerate Progress on SDG 3.4 in Oman.

5 Things We Are Looking Forward to in 2020

We are excited to announce a range of new, high impact partnerships and country engagements this year.

1. Attending the Third Global NCD Alliance Forum
HFI will be in Sharjah in early February, co-leading a session on sustainable investment and smarter financing for NCDs. We are also excited to share that we are part of NCD Alliance Series & BBC Global News campaign, Turning the Tide. We will see you in the UAE soon!

2. Developing and refining our infrastructure and model
We are working to operationalize our in-house due diligence model and establish a high-impact NCD blended finance investment pipeline, and develop a financing diagnostic tool and/or publication that delineates between assistance, innovative, and country financing needs.

3. Building out more partnerships: countries
Our Country Programs team is excited to build out our pipeline of country engagement efforts from 2019. We aim to continue our scoping and diligence efforts, conduct operational research, and launch two blended finance partnerships in two countries.

4. Testing our proof of concept
As we continue to develop our country partnerships, we look forward to testing out our proof of concept and launching a global fundraising campaign for blended finance partnership for NCDs. Read more on our offerings and services on the How To Work With Us section of our website.

5. Bolstering our communications efforts
As HFI continues to grow, we are looking forward to bolstering our communications and advocacy activities, including expanding our efforts to generate blogs and thought leadership pieces.
