NCDs in the time of COVID-19

In this issue:

COVID-19 & Non-Communicable Diseases

With our deep interest in protecting those with chronic conditions, HFI is uniquely positioned to call attention to a deeper understanding of these populations that are most at risk for severe infection and mortality due to COVID-19. Please read our response on our website and stay in the know with our frequent tweets by following HFI on Twitter.

CDC Data Analyses

We analyzed recent data from the CDC to find the increased odds of hospitalization and ICU admission among COVID-19 patients with pre-existing chronic diseases.

NCDs increase the risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes:

  • Emerging data show associations between underlying conditions and COVID19 severity.
  • COVID-19 patients with chronic conditions are up to 11 times as likely to be hospitalized and up to 14 times as likely to be admitted to the ICU as compared to COVID-19 patients without chronic conditions.

HFI’s COVID Strategy

HFI brings unique expertise in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic based on our work within the NCD space and our innovative financing capacities. Given the foreseen global economic recession, we cannot be certain about how governments will invest in COVID-19 recovery strategies.

HFI proposes a framework of medium-term solutions to aid in planning for the COVID-19 recovery phase, so that governments are not forced to divest in other important health interventions. To read more on our strategy, click here. For partners

Our Support for WHO

“COVID-19 knows no borders” said our CEO, Dr. Andrea Feigl, in a recent interview with TRT. We believe that now is not the time to criticize global institutions that need our support during this global crisis. It is the time for solidarity. HFI expresses our support for the World Health Organization during this trying time.

HFI Country Programs

Over the last few months, HFI has been hard at work refining our Country Program strategy and engaging in preliminary country scoping conversations. After conducting a thorough country criteria assessment, we’re excited to announce that we have selected Nigeria, Cambodia, and Jordan as our priority countries.

To help lead, continue, and accelerate our work, we are looking for three HFI Country Ambassadors with extensive partnership building experiences to conduct the first stage of country scoping activities in Cambodia, Jordan, and Nigeria. For more information on these opportunities, visit our website. In addition, if you are working in these countries and are interested in finding ways to collaborate, please reach out at info@healthfinanceinstitute.org

Stay tuned for more information.
